A collection of memorials and biographical details from surveys and written records of the Moravian missionaries who travelled to India in hope of reaching Tibet but finally settled in Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh and to Jamaica in order to bring welfare and Christianity to the slaves.

EILEEN HEWSON found the Moravian Church on her first journey to Ladakh in the 1970s. Recognised as the first Protestant church by Martin Luther in the 15th century, the Moravians have their roots in Moravia (now part of the Czech Republic). It is mainly a missionary movement with headquarters in Herrnhut Germany. However little is known about the church due to the modest nature of its members. In the 18th century they set out to bring Christianity and welfare to the indigenous peoples of the world. In India they prospered in Ladakh and are still there today. The Church is large in Jamaica and the missionaries are remembered for bringing benefits to the slaves who previously died like flies, the ratio of deaths to births was two to one. This is the story of the brave men and women who put their trust in the Lord and went out into the unknown to almost certain death.
